Full An old, filthy, disheveled, scraggly-haired, boisterous, belligerent, haggard and emaciated, homeless man is shooed away from pestering emerging customers, as though he were an annoying fly, by the grocery store’s behavior monitor. He made such an impact on me through the virulence with which he spewed invectives willy-nilly that I frequently recalled him in the following days. Paradoxically to me, the manner of his existence seemed to represent a kind of counter-emblem enunciating the true significance of the rich, and powerful in our society, a faction that is his extreme opposite. I remembered his spindly legs were like Vermicelli and so that is what I called him. In my mind, I was altercasting him in the role of the necessary antihero complement to the hero, named Perciatelli, in an Italian Opera. Perciatelli, as you know, is a long, thick, hollow type of spaghetti. This solitary homeless man’s raspingly shrill, crude, cacophonous tirade from the mucky, noisome street seemed like it would make a fitting refrain to a lyrical leitmotif sung by the hero in an ironically tragic opera emanating from an upscale opera house. In fact, he could well be seen as an offensive parasite, as mere castoff garbage, created by the ruthless, devil-may-care, self-indulgent, exploitation by those of High Estate ensconced in opulence and endowed with elitist education.
Are the homeless man and the elitist ‘hero’ evil, or one evil and the other good? Did they get that way by being born that way like ‘bad seeds’? Are they Leibnizian monads pristinely unfolding from within, without external causal factors shaping them to be evil; cases of psychological spontaneous generation; and simply sui generis evil in and of themselves? Were these two types somehow possessed of an evil will, were intransigent, and efforts to reform or cure them were futile?
Are they examples of an economically necessary symbiotic parasitism?
The issue could be looked at from another perspective. If you consider the little vignette above, does it seem emblematic of our culture? If so, could you also begin to think that there might be something wrong with the way human civilization has evolved? Is this the only way civilization could be structured? Is this condition of society social reality such that it is unalterable? Is humankind inflexibly predestined to produce examples of polar opposites like those above with historical and biological inevitability? If we can gain a perspective on how civilization evolved and how it is functioning now, could we, then, possibly imagine and implement a better alternative? Should we feel obligated to do so?
If we look back to the origins of our nation and examine the ideas and the men who formulated its constitution, we may see that what lay concealed beneath what seemed to have been conceived in glory was also an incunabula seeded with insidious evil destined to proliferate its tentacles and sprawl around the globe. The pilgrims who fathered them came with dreams of a new kingdom for themselves and a democracy for the lowly passengers sailing with them. Finally, their great-grandchildren, schooled by the philosophers of the Enlightenment, they would fulfill those regal dreams. Awe inspiring to generations since the Liberty Bell first rang in Philadelphia; the founding fathers would construct a document worthy of a place of honor, no, I should say worship, in the archives of great political literature. Nevertheless, encrypted within in it and detectable only to those graduated from the Ivy League, were paradoxes penned ab initio by the hands of none other than the great John Locke.
John Locke and the paradox of egalitarianism and slavery set a precedent for the F Fs. The Founding Fathers and slavery[1]
The Founding Fathers put in the constitution that all men were created equal. They said the people could vote for the candidate of their choice. Of course, people did not mean slaves, Native American, or women. After all, slaves were not fully human. The Native Americans should all be dead before the first vote.[2] And women, well, why bother with them, how likely was it that they would get to the polls when they were always barefoot and pregnant. Anyway, if the women did get to the polls, they would vote for the man who was an honest gentleman who was the best looking. You will recall most of the ‘Founding Fathers’ were businessmen and lawyers and all were politicians. Furthermore, have you seen their pictures? The Founding Fathers did not have to think twice about that one. Maybe they thought women were actually the same as slaves. Alternatively, maybe because they were not given an education they would be too stupid to vote yet smart enough to know what they were really like. On the other hand, maybe they knew none of those women was going to vote for any male bastard anyway.
They did not worry about the rest of the people because it is clear that they thought ‘the people’ were too stupid and uninformed to know for what they were voting. They surely made the implicit assumption that for which the people voted depended on which candidates were the best hoodwinker and liar. Each Founding Father was so arrogant that they were sure they would win; after all, they had already demonstrated they were among the best hoodwinkers and liars in the land.

The media and dumbing down the populace
The question I am asking is not what the nature of the human being is. Let me reiterate. I am asking what has been the nature of our existence as a language using, self-aware, social species.
Once born with anonymity into the vastly variegated, endless, inscrutable, piebald universe, infants are cheered on by anxiously hopeful parents as they take their first steps on their long journey of banality that ends with their last step slipping off to return and merge with their fertile, green, earthen home, even as their despairing and fearful relatives mourn. The universe does not despair.
A filmmaker could aptly portray the mass of humanity’s habitual plodding as monotony, occasionally punctuated with annoying intrusions by capricious reality. Parallel to their behavior, and intelligence notwithstanding, they are unaware of the nature of their minds and the forces that propel it. All the while, the oblivious human mind is inundated with sexual cravings, is driven by biological hunger to forage for or prepare food regularly through each day, and, just as biologically, to confirm secure inclusion in one’s group, all activated, whether successfully or not, daily and repetitiously. Their comments uttered without thought or their thoughts, if such are milling about, enigmatically spring into speech there-from. Either one as the case may be, being mere epiphenomenon.
Most species have an affiliation gene. They form colonies, schools, packs, flocks, herds, troops, tribes, and organizations as in the case of humans. Mothers keep their infants close. For a member to stray and be separated from the group almost certainly means it will be killed or die from helplessness. Almost all species have genetically based fear/flight and anger/aggression response behaviors. Groups have identifying marks. Even those of their own species with unfamiliar or different marks are likely to be perceived as enemies and attacked or avoided. Some species even have false identifiers that function as defense mechanisms. Soldiers are known to travel under false flags to avoid attack. And, of course, there is the famous example of the Trojan Horse of the ancient Greeks. In-group and out-group status is of crucial importance for the welfare, and even survival, for almost all species and certainly for humans.
Yet, while in most ways humans are similar in nature to insects and monkeys, for its particular species of mind, this human’s mind, its wiring, is unique in having a feature that is at odds with its evolutionary predecessors and most noteworthy even at odds with itself. While almost all species have a group belongingness gene, the human’s gene includes, in addition, a longing for familiar signs, symbols, and vocabulary that signify the socially identifying territorial markers exclusive to its singular, distinct group. These markers are essential to providing recognition, for both insiders and outsiders, that one belongs to that one group and that its membership includes a guarantee of perpetual security as long as one is a member in good standing.
Some groups require anonymity or a disguise to avoid attack from rivals. This requirement has a long history when, even in primitive civilizations, some subgroups within a larger cohesive society formed secret societies to avoid persecution for their eccentricity or to plan covert operations and gain an advantage over competitors or enemies. This is true for all humans and their groups from families to teenage gangs to Chambers of Commerce and fraternal organizations. With unusually eccentric subgroups and for such exclusive groups as with the military and corporations, espionage or spying is common. For each type of spying, there are usually counterintelligence operations. This covert behavior requires a facility for going incognito, for both the ability to recognize the in-group’s secret signs and a facility for cloaking oneself to engage in subterfuge with no chance of being detected. For some humans this must become a delicate, subtle art requiring extensive training. For others, such a refined level of the art comes natural, much to the misfortune of the rest of us. Of course, infiltration is legendary and the stuff of many movies as coaches, corporations, the CIA, and FBI, other government and military covert operations, police undercover agents, and many other organizations seek to learn the future business plans, pending patents, fashion designs, software, chemical formulas, game strategies of rivals and to lure top level personnel away rivals. Whistleblowers are like accidental spies and have been known to bring down huge corporations. Deception, creating false reports and myths, staging pseudo events as a diversionary tactic, camouflage, high tech electronics such as wiretapping and computer software for surveillance, especially of emails, like Carnivore[3], now are all standard parts of the cultures Western and Asian nations. Such always has been, whether primitive or sophisticated, and currently is the perpetual, unavoidable, ignominious fate of our complex, language using, deception, and illusion prone species. Man is the best and most complex deceiver of all species, it is just that no one notices it. Of course, the complement to that is that paranoia is a universal aspect of the human species; it is just that no one notices it. We do not notice air either, until it is absent or polluted.
There is a residual kind of primordial fear stemming from an experience of abandonment in childhood. That experience colors all subsequent similar experiences and those feelings may surface along with memories of or current encounters with abandonment’s surrogate, namely disapproval or rejection. Mere threats of rejection may trigger those horrid feelings in some. For some modern women, there lurks a fear, on the furthest outskirts of her mind, of becoming something akin to a bag lady. For many modern men, there lurks a fear of losing their job or title. For so many, moving from youth into their independent days of adulthood, approval is only temporary assurance of a respite from the wolves of disapproval snapping at their heels. Death is for many the ultimate abandonment. So, it is not just the evolutionary lineage linking humans and animals in a genetic proclivity for affiliation that underpins the human drive for adherence to local norms. It is the vaguely sensed coercive power of those ‘local’ norms common to their family, organized groups, gangs, teams, corporations, and community that combine with these deeper fears stemming from childhood that cause men and women to deceive, unfairly use, or abuse their fellow humans, and to compromise their integrity in order to conform and to avoid all manner of emotional discomforts. The possibilities of becoming a reject or an outcast are fears that connect with the very early and forgotten experiences of or fears of abandonment combined with the fear of death that came soon after childhood in each person’s life history.
When faced with being stripped of, or just the threat of being stripped of, the security of a membership, all other drives are suspended or greatly reduced in priority until good standing is restored. When a human is a member in good standing, the other dominant drives of sex and survival are shaped to conform to the norms of one’s group in order to maintain that good standing. Because of this, humans are perpetually struggling with inner ‘conflicts of interest’ between primitive drives and diverse societal norms. For many these are sources of intense inner stress and anxiety. Even for a few, these conflicts are unbearable.
In the final analysis, sex, hunger, avoidance of discomfort, and survival when there are threats to life, all of these per se, have neither conscience nor slightest concerns with social conformity. The primitive nature of these drives causes them to arise and to be acted upon before socially indoctrinated conscience or immediate social constraints can intervene. These drives can be elicited in the most socially inappropriate immediate social circumstances. Likewise, they can arise when the immediate social constraints are virtually absent. In other words, conditions in which such ‘rational’ considerations should be invoked are also those in which, ever so frequently, the primitive has already preempted the rational and the inner constraints of conscience. Once violations of group norms have occurred, the mass of humanity must strive to avoid discovery or do one’s best to deceive and rationalize in order to avoid becoming an outcast. This dramatic dilemma is so terrifyingly typical of us humans. Unable to escape its essential nature as an enigmatic conglomeration of mental and physical contradictions that are accompanied by their fear of loss of security, humans flit from one mindless distraction to another. And, thusly, whether distracted flitting like a butterflies among the colorful neon flowers of the city or, rarely in our modern world, among the wild ones of the outdoors, or just while blithely swimming like young children in shallow waters within the constraints of public pools, do humans try to spend their brief tenure on earth.
Nevertheless, at the bottom of the deepest, murky waters of their souls, or within the solitude of four walls in the dark of night, there forever lurks the distant mystifying dread of abandonment, of death, of agonizing last days of dying, or of the possibility of being killed abruptly and brutally by some crazed invader. Back in the sun’s comforting glow, enmeshed in the daily flow, the traces of our tortured nocturnal fears may fade. But then, there comes, even in the security of daylight, more close to the surface of consciousness, the less final yet perpetually immediate kin of these, which is the fear of disapproval, rejection, or, even the most extreme, becoming an outcast. Oh, what majestic displays we contrive to make us feel we will perpetually stay alive, secure, accepted, and free. From these eternal returns, arise the great and agonizing moral dilemmas of life. Were it not so, dramatists from many millennia heretofore all the way to modern playwrights would be bereft of material.

Like all of us, these too long to be distracted from becoming aware, when theirs is set against a mural of life’s brevity, of the ultimate finality, triviality, and ultimate worthlessness, of their own lives. In their cloistered study, well educated as many are, they may contemplate, in a kind of surreal, intellectual, and coolly objective manner, a brutally unwelcome acknowledgement of their kinship, indistinguishable from the masses, with the inorganic minerals floating lifeless through infinite galaxies. Yet, how different are they, really, from the totally oblivious preteen girls and boys, who, as one among thousands of carbon copy, scatterbrained peers, scream their lungs out to show their love for the inaccessible rock star bellowing, through multi-storied speakers and effervescent fireworks, crude, titillating lyrics to their lust frenzied hordes of young fans beneath them. None of these, from the wealthy, the sage, or frenzied fan, not even the legendary Saint Simeon Stylites[4] of the fifth century A.D., sitting solitary atop a Pillar fifteen yards high for thirty-seven years, are immune to the shaping forces of structures and systems of their eras. Saint Simeon, specifically, was shaped by structures and systems of the heterogeneous cultures of his period and even more so shaped by his local social surroundings and the Coptic Orthodox Christian religion with which he was affiliated, and, of course, most of all by his devout mother, so thoroughly shaped as she had been before him. And, thusly has it been for civilized humanity down through the eons.
How oblivious to the fragile conditions of existence are the coddled and the powerful alike as they daily flit about their particularly brands of distractions within their petite corners or their global realms! How small, after all, regardless of the range of their geo-perimeters, are the arenas of the minds of each alike!

To admit to being an atheist is to assign oneself to the class of outcasts. The philosophically minded may be caught up in Pascal’s ‘Wager’, but in this case, weighing the consequences for their intellectual standing of choosing to believe or not to believe in god. Likewise, the politically minded may be caught up in weighing career advantages or disadvantages of conceding to doubts and openly and authentically choosing atheism versus rationalizing and adopting, as a utilitarian choice, a profession of belief in god. For the charlatan in politicians, this is not like the dilemma of ‘Buridan’s Ass.’[5] Intellectual integrity must be set aside for the sake of successful campaign rhetoric while addressing the believing populace. In a world of highly intelligent, rational beings, atheism should be the choice since the injection a superstitious, supernatural worldview into contemplation concerning the distance ends or goals for civilization and the near term means to reach them would surely muddy the waters of objectivity. Such tender-minded or weak-minded religious thinking would doom the destiny of humanity. The only sane alternative is to hoodwink the masses into thinking one believes in and includes god in their thought processes while shielding them from the actual machinations involved in the tough-minded plotting of the future. The danger with this alternative is that the clandestine and powerful elites doing the plotting are bound to yield to the temptation to design the future in their favor at enormous cost to the poor, unsuspecting populace. Latent for millennia, this god-dilemma that leaders have faced is finally beginning to be understood and exposed as a disastrous liability for humankind. Democracies have none but the worst of choices. This is not a problem for Communist China.
The existentialist may look with disdain on humanity’s necessity for believing in creeds containing illusions of immortality and their need for contemporary dictums for qualifying and disqualifying. They may mentally smirk at their fellow humans’ loosely disguised hysterical clamoring for a sense of belonging to one of these salvation-offering groups. They may write with condescension about their equally gosh and craven requirements for gaudy tangible icons and denotations like graffiti, or ‘sacred’ trinkets, or their quest for in-group brand name clothing and accoutrements such as identifying turbans, armbands, ribbons, badges, posters, and all manner of outlandish possessions that certify their status as members in good standing. They see an irony in the manner in which those of high rank and status require thrones, rituals, heralds, gestures, demonstrations of deference of all sorts to announce with braggadocio to the rest of their fellows that they are, in fact, the leaders and distinct from those others who are their followers. Followers of this or that sect, organization, corporation, team, or gang similarly require ostentatious displays signifying membership and loyalty.
To the philosopher these displays merely designate that ‘those’ people all are just like easily rounded up and herded domesticated cattle with one steer blindly in the lead and in the rear wild Billy cowboys with fifth grade educations on quarter horses get ‘em up and move ‘em out and cut the stragglers back into the herd. The lot of them being completely unaware of their common, dismal destiny. Of course, these ‘cattle’ have not been reading the existentialists nor any other philosopher. No one, not their family, their preacher, not those snug in elegant suburban homes, not the media, the corporations, the gangs, nor the government is keeping, can keep, or will keep them informed about who, what, and how their fate ultimately is being shaped. Certainly not the philosophers or sophisticated culture critics among the intelligentsia! Nor can any of these properly care for them. In the end, they all, basically, are defenseless, exposed to the elements of a predatory, deceptive culture; much like those cattle alone in a vast pasture ravaged by and at the mercy of inclement heat, storms, and freezing rain. Such is the lot of the run of the mill populace including those in gated communities.
Unlike harmless cattle, however, groups of humans can be herded, like troops of marauding baboons, to obey their alpha male leaders’ orders to humiliate, intimidate, thieve from, mane for sport, and even kill, without the slightest flinch of conscience. Humans can easily, oh so easily, be led to commit unspeakably heinous deeds even upon those of their own species. This is especially true if their victims happen to have the misfortune of belonging to a different tribe, society organization, exclusive club, team, corporation, denomination, nation, or gang. Human cultures and their subgroups indoctrinate their youth into group behavioral norms and beliefs. The youth, nearly universally, incorporate and follow, forthwith, reflexively, without reflection or questioning. Whether members of a ‘criminal’ mob or the military, young men and women faithfully will carry out orders from their leaders even if it is to destroy or murder. They will do so without knowledge of the true intent of the mission, and they will not question or have a qualm as they mechanically grind into oblivion other unwittingly, undeserving innocents just like themselves. There are a few rare exceptions, however, such as conscientious objectors, or some who are acutely insightful about the idiocy of their culture, who take refuge from the powerful, legitimized henchmen for the ‘system’, the ‘establishment,’ in foreign lands. The rest know they will be dishonorably discharged, imprisoned, or even shot.
Jesus does not answer but just looks compassionately at Pilate for He is well known to have said that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In the works of Shakespeare, there is an oft-quoted saying, “Be true to thyself, and thou canst not be false to any man.” Just prior to that, Machiavelli wrote, “Every man believes, however he may be perceived by others, that he is good.” Eighteen-hundred years later, Soren Kierkegaard, the famous Danish Christian Existentialist, writes, “truth is subjectivity.” In accord with Kierkegaard, the famous early twentieth century German existential-phenomenologist, Martin Heidegger, writes that truth is equated with authenticity. Does it not seem evident that humans find self-deception, denial against accusations, deception of others, and manipulation and exploitation of others astonishingly unproblematic? Do you wonder why that is? Do you see any relation between Simeon Stylites removing himself to the top of a high pillar for thirty-seven years, until his very death, and these disingenuous and unauthentic characteristics of humans? Did Simeon know the power of worldly structures and systems to shape us? Contemplate that question for a moment in the context of the preceding paragraphs.
Jesus, on the cross and as he was being spat upon, cursed, stoned, and finally speared in the heart, uttered these final words, “Forgive them for they know not what they do.” But, to whom was He referring? Was it only to the Jews throwing stones or to the Centurion thrusting a spear in his heart? Was it to His disciples who had abandoned Him? Was it to the Jews who had judged Him and accused Him of being blasphemous to such a degree that it required the death penalty? Was it to the Romans who regarded Him as a dangerous revolutionary? Have these last words of Jesus ever been interpreted to mean society in general? In Leonard Bernstein’s “Westside Story,” a delinquent tauntingly spews at the police officer “I’ve got a social disease.” The intent of these lyrics is to heap ridicule upon the misguided ‘bleeding hearts’ that try to foist blame off the individual and onto a corrupt and inhumane society. Many political and social liberals see society as the ultimate source that is generating delinquency and most other forms of criminal behavior. Paradoxically, liberals, like the Minister of Justice judging a petty thief, regard the hugely more harmful behavior of corporations as the personal responsibility and the evil, mercenary intentions of the CEOs. Are not the thief, the prostitute, and the CEO who deliberately dumps toxic chemicals in water supplies equally shaped by the structures and systems of their culture? Does not the phrase, “Let he who has not sinned throw the first stone.” apply equally to all? What shaped each to act in such a way to be judged and condemned by someone, somewhere? What shaped each to judge another as evil? Why do you judge? And, from whence did your basis come for blaming and judging as evil, not just the acts but the personhood of, some other?
Perhaps there is something akin to John Rawls concept that all humans born have the inalienable right to equal justice, whether it is social, economic, or legal justice, somehow present as a criterion for evaluating how fellow humans are to be or should be treated. While humans obviously do not live by that concept, just as no humans live by the Kantian “Categorical Moral Imperative,” they are, on some level, evaluating how fellow humans and themselves are being treated. One thing the application of the logic of Kant’s moral philosophy does is provide the grounds for judging almost all human individuals as unethical, or evil. If this is an aspect of our “Collective Unconscious,” then, as Heidegger speculated, “there is a legitimate sense of guilt,” perhaps it can be amended here. To that end, I extend it now to include a legitimate collective sense of guilt for how humans treat each other, completely distinct from neurotic guilt.
Collective, here, is not meant to assume a genetic component of Homo sapiens. Rather, this sense of collective is more like a zeitgeist. It is a ubiquitous aspect of all those within a culture. In this case, the collective unconscious, or zeitgeist, includes, within the unconscious of all persons within their culture, and particularly Western culture, the sense that to survive they must abuse and neglect their fellow humans. This sense must be hidden from themselves and from others. This is the origin of the public personality. Thus, all persons within a culture must develop a public personality. A public personality is an inauthentic personality. All persons infected with this inauthenticity have the unavoidable sense of guilt buried deep in their ‘private self.’ Therefore, this can be called a collective unconscious sense of guilt.
Such a collective sense of guilt is facilitated (regardless of how accurate or superficial are their presentations of events that tug at the heartstrings and elicit fleeting feelings of collective guilt in their huge audiences) by the vast extension of television throughout most of the modern world. From that position, we can, or could, begin to move toward collective justice, perhaps even somewhat intelligently so. The problem is, as long as we humans focus on the singular individual as the cause, the source, of evil actions, then, for as long as humans continue to exist, collective justice will never be achieved. Of course, by focusing on amorphous targets like America, the government, or the corporate world, with nothing specific to address, collective guilt and collective indignation will be in vain. The sinister cloak of the public personality and collective inauthenticity will remain.
Should the collective focus, via the media, switch to engendering a cultural reform, to a collective emphasis on discarding public personalities and facilitating authenticity, that endeavor would entail restructuring the entire sweep of our structures and systems. The reason for this is that the structures and systems of our culture are configured to perpetuate exploitation of our fellow humans. Individuals will work to prevent restructuring because that entails exposure of personal guilt. The defective structures and systems emphasize personal guilt. Therein lies the malignant paradox. To shift away from personal responsibility and guilt to collective or corporate responsibility removes the prevalent rationalization used by opportunists in all human endeavors, namely that that is the way the world is, everybody either does it to some extent or they do not survive. Some will even say to confidants that they are just being upfront about their crookedness. Some will say that it is just a matter of ‘only the strong survive.’ Nevertheless, if a person is caught, the issue becomes one of personal responsibility again. The corrupt ‘system’ is never charged or indicted. Even the clergy is well known to cultivate naiveté toward exploitative business practices where their biggest contributors are concerned. Would anyone, does anyone, convict, or condemn the clergy because in our culture the structure of business almost universally leads to exploitation their employees and promulgates false advertizing with ill effects on consumers?

Brain chemistry and mental illness[8]
Psychiatric diagnosis pretext of profit and social control invalid for verdict of not guilty in courts and psychological testing and treatment as useless and many studies such the one from Bulgaria reveal demographic characteristics most predictive of criminal behavior by a huge margin. At this point, I will make a distinction between blue-collar and white-collar offenders. Most incarcerated offenders are blue-collar and most studies are on blue-collar offenders. When politicians make campaign speeches about getting tough on crime, they are referring to blue-collar crimes. The demographics for white-collar criminals are strikingly different, as are their offenses. When I queried Google with the entry “Environment factors predisposing to criminal behavior,” I retrieved URLs that cited seventeen genetic and biological (brain and brain chemistry) studies and only three that cited the negative environmental conditions that were like to result in criminal behavior. I am making the supposition that this imbalance reflects a very strong bias in our culture as a whole which is then reflected in academic, scientific research. Debates about what to do about crime, by default, are referring to blue-collar crime and criminals. The number in prisons and jails in 2007 are quite revealing statistics. Few white-collar criminals are incarcerated (199,000) and if they are, they are sent to what is referred to as ‘country club’ federal prisons. One of the main reasons for this is that most white-collar crimes fall under federal statues and therefore dispositions are to federal ‘country club’ prisons. Many more offenders are incarcerated in state prisons (1,395,916) and Local jails held (766,010) and these are almost totally blue-collar. The ratio of federal to state inmates is one to seven. By category of offense, federal were and state were Regardless of which offenders are in prison where, incarceration is a notorious failure as a means of deterrence, rehabilitating, or reforming offenders.
Furthermore, counseling incarcerated offenders is completely a waste of time. Un-incarcerated offenders do not receive psychotherapy or psychiatric treatment because they cannot be reimbursed for it. Probationers ordered to go to counseling do not improve their behavior. Community based justice councils can have a remarkably successful effect in reducing crime and reforming offenders. A program like Stars and Stripes has remarkable success rate in reforming inmates and reducing recidivism. [9]

Ten headings follow that all begin with the words “Singling Out.” The section as a whole deals with both structures and systems. My thesis includes the idea that nations and their cultures consist of numerous structures. It further includes the idea that each structure encompasses systems, and that within and across structures, there are many systems that interconnect. You may think of them as encompassing and sub systems. I shall try to make clear to the reader that, while these sub systems exist within vast, complex, encompassing systems, they can be singled out. Larger systems and individual systems within them can be both singled out to examine their nature and functions and the way they influence one another within their interconnections.
To understand why when some small parts of a culture may change rapidly, the whole culture may take decades and centuries to change. Technology may change rapidly and bring a few other parts of the culture along with them, the major structures such as the departments within the federal government or the educational institutions remain intransigent. Another example of this is that products and businesses change rapidly but the free enterprise system is extremely intransigent.
Imagine that you are the president and you must give personal attention to each Department, Agency, Commission, Council, etc. every day. The issues each face is enormously complex. That task is impossible. The president must delegate responsibility for this vast number of branches to trusted others. While each branch has serious complex issues that affect the health of the population and even the ultimate survival of the planet, taken together or even singly, they are a muddled labyrinth impossible grasp and cognitively manage. What the public hears about in the daily news are the loudest and easiest to examine squeaks in thousands of wheels of national life that some story hungry reporter comes upon by happenstance.
The Power Elite[16]
A used car salesman turns back the speedometer on the cars on his lot. He tries to make it seem like all of his cars were previously owned by a little ole lady from Pasadena. He puts special lubricants in key places in the engine and in wherever he finds squeaks and rattles in the body. In this hypothetical case, he actually sells one of these cars to a little ole lady from Pasadena. She drives the car for a week and it falls apart. A trusted mechanic tells her exactly how she got ripped off. She returns with a written description of the salesman’s fowl deed and acts for a refund of her money. He laughs as tells her that she obviously must not remember him telling her that he is selling the car to her “as is.” He is actually protected by the law from prosecution or reimbursement. At noon, he goes to his weekly Rotarian lunch and boasts with impunity of his shrewdness.
Consider another individual, an unemployed, distraught father, no longer able to bear seeing his children and wife starving is caught stealing. The minister of justice must abide by the law and, proclaiming that the father is responsible for his own actions, which in this were a violation of the law, and he therefore sentences the father to prison. Forthwith his children eventually die of malnutrition. Nevertheless, the law, blind justice, which after all is just like God, like blind nature, is no respecter of persons.
Aside from the group, or organization, phenomena, the individual, on the other hand, suffers a distinctly different categorization. For example, consider emotionally immature, unschooled for parenthood, harried, parents. Such parents may become outraged because their infant does not obey orders to cease their annoying crying. In this circumstance, they can react impulsively even to the extent of infanticide. An artist stands before and easel, a poet with pen in hand, an old lady lovingly crocheting a quilt, they all may say along with the Minister of Justice, as a distant chorus and as though reading from the same teleprompter, “what awful parents they were to have murdered their own infant. What monsters they must be!”
In a time of encompassing awareness of the rest of the world and a sense of impending global doom the ’Now’ generations and Enlightened Self-interest seem bizarrely out of character. We have been encouraged to be the generation of ‘enlightened self interest’[24] with a demand for personal freedom and yet we feel dominated, robbed of a voice or power, stressed, exploited, and under the spying eye of big brother[25]. We have arrived at an era of awareness of the devastating consequences resulting from the profligacy of the past and yet have demurred from assuming responsibility but rather we deflect and project on to an anonymous ‘they.’ We have come to simultaneously idolize and envy, depend upon and distrust, honor and denigrate the powerful, the wealthy, and celebrities. We are in an era fraught with conflict, corruption, and ubiquitous blame. We seem of revel in the media’s catcalls and loutish portrayals of the guilt of public figures but as the scapegoat du jour disappears from the media landscape, we simply await the next public hanging in effigy. We are in an era of immediate access to information about the ominously threatening and desperate conditions of populations around the world. We sign protest petitions which say ‘Ain’t it awful!’ and yet we feel and know that we are impotent to do anything about it. Sending a small donation does not seem to quell the beast of collective guilt. We are a generation on a desperate quest for both inner peace and world peace.
People rush to immerse themselves in the drive for success; for immediate gratification; for consoling ‘status’ consumption; for engaging in high risk recreation; and for dazzling entertainment that can distract us from self-awareness of complicity in our collective corruption and the accompanying gut-wrenching guilt snapping at our inner heels. For many this inner torture only surfaces from the depths of our unconscious in ghoulish, sweat-drenching nightmares.
These young adults have put their faith in being narcissistic and independent of external limits and controls. The pain their parents and grandparents felt during their struggles to succeed in this civilized jungle caused them to be over-indulgent and consequently tended to facilitate the narcissistic, greedy, devil may care attitude of our new generation. However, recent events in our nation, with its global economic ties, eventuated in a sudden global downturn in the ‘good life’, causing them to realize that none of this ‘Me’ life style is working. In the wake of the sudden austerity, signs of a watered down form of sixties’ protest movements are showing up, particularly through internet instigated email protests and meetups on special environmental, energy, economic, and political issues. They have a new form of distraction in these protest movements that also helps overcome these bewildering new feelings of impotence. Nevertheless, neither young nor old who are outside the national and international stratospheric corporate and political elite circles are beginning to realize that they cannot hold back this march of the new century of globalized, borderless, consortium of plutocrats. Hence, we are seeing the loud but impotent protests by well-educated young adults wherever the meetings like the WTO and G8 and G20, or the enigmatic Bilderbergers, take place. In the final analysis, the “The Outsider,” particularly[26] and to some extent even the populace, are at a loss to know what to do about this “New World Order.” [27]

In My Stock Broker School, an Ex-FBI Agent Said, “At last, I have found my paradise!”
Common Criminal Personality:
In general, the
criminal saw the world in "chess-board" terms, as people were there pawns to
manipulate at will for their own personal gain(Harris,1984:227). The anti-social
behavior developed when the offenders were young, some as young as age
four(Nott,1977:*). The criminal, early in life, consciously removed himself from
the rules of society. The conventional activities and interests of his peers
were abhorred by the fledgling criminal(Samenow,1978:17). Fighting, lying, and
stealing were very frequent activities by the young criminal. Notably, the
criminal is pro-active in his approach of rejection to others(Samenow,1978:17).
Consequently, he is the first to establish polarity between himself and others
(Samenow, 1984 :49). Additionally:
|
|
he shies away from affection(Nott,1977:*) |
|
|
he is very restless, dissatisfied, and irritable(Samenow,1984:26) |
|
|
he perfunctorily engages in civil communication only to prevent others from being suspicious of his behavior(Nott,1977:*) |
|
|
he considers requests from teachers, parents, and others as impositions(Samenow,1984:47) |
|
|
he continually sets himself apart from others |
|
|
he is enamored with living a life of excitement, at whatever expense (Samenow,1981:6) |
|
|
he habitually experiences anger as a way of life(Samenow,1984:172) |
|
|
he lacks empathy |
|
|
he feels no obligation to anyone except his own interests |
|
|
he has no understanding of responsible decision making, having prejudged situations(Samenow,1998:68) |
|
|
he has a daily struggle with "Murphy's Law". That is, when something is bound to go wrong, it probably will. Criminals cannot cope with this obstacle well(Samenow,1998:69).

Community Councils should work much better for common criminals while white-collar crime requires massive overhaul of the economic and political aspects of the US and perhaps all of Western culture.
Police play the ‘cops and rebels’ with youth and ‘cops and indigents’ with the homeless. Police time and effort could be so much better served if they were integrated with Community Justice Councils as a Division within Neighborhood Community Councils. The police collaborate with a specialty newspaper called “Busted.”
Community Justice Councils can be a home for a Dispute Resolution Center where Mediation is used for misdemeanors, some felonies, and issues like divorce.
Governments have operated under an implicit belief in the ‘Cult of the Individual.’ Civilizations have had no other recourse to correct offending behavior than punishment such as physical cruelty, incarceration, banishment, and execution. This, of course, has not worked. Religious leaders have preached forgiveness but that has not worked either. Humans can be forgiving, if lovingly brought up, but as you must know, forgiving is not a recipe for reforming the offending persons. Furthermore, and also as you may not know as do I who spent over half of my professional career working with offenders, punishment is not just ineffective but is counterproductive. In Oliver Stone’s panned movie “Natural Born Killers (1994),”[33] he clearly charts the influence of a horrendous environment on the childhood of his central character. Suffering unspeakable abuse at the hands of his parents, particularly his diabolically ruthless father, the young man eventually teams up with a young woman with a similar background and together, they become coldblooded, serial joy-killers. In 1987, Stone came out with the famous movie “Wall Street” that chronicles the ruthlessness of a Wall Street investment banker who specializes in mergers and acquisitions. After acquiring a company, he mercilessly dismantles the company, selling off its parts and ending the careers of loyal workers, leaving them destitute. The Gordon Gekko utters the famous and off repeated words “Greed is good!” at turning point in the movie “Wall Street.” In the forthcoming movie, “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”, Stone has Gekko returning, after twenty years in prison. “Greed is good!”, illustrating the psychology that imprisonment as punishment does not change character. Of course, I select this as an example because it so well illustrates my Natural Systems philosophy that character and behavior is shaped by the structures and systems of one’s culture.
Demographics and the configuration of and trajectory of population growth are of critical interest to many facets of our society. The vested interests of those in countries with vastly divergent population growth trends are in marked contrast to one another. The population growth concerns of Western nations conflict with those of Eastern nations. The vested interests of political parties with respect to population trends are vastly different. The interests of age groups with respect to population trends are vastly different. Seniors want to keep their Social Security and the diminishing numbers of youth is a threat to Social Security. Large numbers on Social Security presages disaster for the national budget. Philosophically, the wealthy elites hold conflicting positions on both demographic trends and the idea that demography is destiny. The idea of “Demography is destiny.”[34], a neologism introduced by August Comte in the mid nineteenth century, negates the elite’s cornerstone belief that genetics is destiny. On the other hand, the increase in immigrants and the burgeoning growth in lower class and ethnic groups with their inclination toward the Democratic Party cause them to their fear demography will turn destiny against them. Yet, regardless of ethnicity, increases in the poorly educated, lower class workers means competition among the laborers for jobs and that keeps unemployment high, wages low, impoverished ghettos high, and lawlessness and criminality, especially among the educationally disadvantaged youth, high. Admitting this is equivalent to admitting that demography is destiny.
A graphic, cinematic, example of demography being destiny can be found in the new movie, “Machete” (2010)[35]. In this movie, “Machete,” Dan Trejo played the lead character who is also named “Machete.” Here is a quote from Dan Trejo’s during an interview about his life: “Juvenile hall, youth authority . . . I was in a lot of trouble. I grew up like the characters I've been playing. But would I do things differently? I honestly believe that circumstances create destiny, almost. There weren't too many ways I could have done things. The only things that were available to me were either be a laborer or be a drug dealer. So, I became an armed robber. It was a lot simpler.” In other words, for many millions of youth condemned to living in such ghettos, demography doles out a cruel destiny. Ironically, the elites espouse a mockery of the academics social philosophy so inelegantly and mockingly tossed back into officer Krupke’s face by one of delinquents being arrested, as sung in “West Side Story”: (Dear kindly Sergeant Krupke, You gotta understand, It's just our bringin' up-ke That gets us out of hand. . . . it’s a social disease!) [36]
Not only are demographics determinative of individuals’ behavior but are determinative of the destiny of the planet and the fate of humanity.[37]
Bill Gates[38], Warren Buffet, Ted Turner, and other billionaires whose fortunes are secure for the brief time remaining in their lives, are now becoming more concerned that the role of population growth is far more dangerous to the future of earth and humanity than is Climate Change per se. In line with this, they are saying that we must get world population down to 2 billion before 2100. Malthus wrote a variation of the same dire predictions in 1798. US Corporation CEOs have poohed Malthus prediction! Also, in 1950, my Sociology 101 professor poohed both Malthus and me for supporting the Malthusian theory[39]. Nevertheless, it is increasingly clear that our belief in endless population growth, endless economic growth, and endless growth in a US style of prosperity for all the globe is a corporate dream and humanity’s nightmare!
The structures and systems of civilizations are all interconnected and all are directly influenced by demography. Together, these have evolved into an almost foreordained socio-economic configuration to produce our current crises. The fate of the planet; of humanity as a whole; the trends of humanity’s growing epidemics of diseases; the global trends of civil wars, of murderous, exploitative, and even self-destructive behaviors; the rise of criminal offenses that are unique to each class; all are interconnected with demographics. The overcoming this dire fate of the earth and its peoples first requires understanding the role of demographics and of demography as destiny. Second, overcoming our pell mell rush over the cliffs of doom will require that our leaders around the globe find the discipline to make the draconian decisions and take those actions necessary to steer, in unison, the ships of state toward heretofore-unimagined forms of government, economics, and all, veritably all, of our anachronistic institutions.
Differing from the military, but only in degree of violence, are the members of our highly organized educational institutions. Whether they are faculty or students, members will follow the regulations, requirements, and the behavioral protocol prescribed by their institution. Just as all other groups, they will do this reflexively and without reflection, questioning, or qualms. Whether the military, the corporation, the educational institution, or gang, they conform because that is their social reality, just like earth, air, and water are their material reality. Any harm, typically mental or emotional harm, done to students or faculty of educational institutions, in the course of their regular proceedings, is simply considered normal; such things are to be expected as natural to their social reality. It is just in the nature of things, just unavoidable collateral damage done within an otherwise essential and beneficent organization, and consequently not regarded as harm. These dedicated, honorable souls could not identify the nature of the harm or the fault causing the harm and, if they were to take note, perhaps even research it, they certainly could not label it evil.
Those in higher education are some of the most intelligent people in the nation. The nature of their focus on a single discipline prevents them from comprehending the harmful nature of the broader, interlocked, structures and systems of the nation.

Gigantic farm monopolies destroy small farms. Food product corporations are destroying our health.
This is what the GMO controversy is all about. The big food corporations want to put the small farmers and whole (naturally grown and unprocessed) foods’ grocers out of business. These big food corporations have gained control over the EPA, FHA, and FDA and related federal agencies and together they have been waging war through civil suits for patent infringement and now have taken over the local police, and in this CA case, to use them as soldiers with weapons to enforce their domination of every facet of the food industry. The stories abound about this corporate war against the small farmers and naturally grown and unprocessed foods. Total monopoly of the food industry is their goal. Of course, we are seeing the same collusion between the government and the pharmaceutical industry as well. Ordinary citizens must resist and prevent this from happening. [45]
The history of raw milk provides a telling example of how a corporate leader used the media and deception to change dairy farming and milk a primary food staple. [47] As a child, born on the 1st of January 1933, I was served raw milk until circa 1940 until the news media spread the fabrication that you could get undulant fever or brucellosis as is now called and you had to switch to pasteurized. While my mother usually bought pasteurized milk from then on, we often still drank raw milk as the families of many of my friends had cows in pens by their homes and milked their cows daily. The city made livestock in town illegal due to the threat of disease, though there had been not such disease for a hundred years. Some of my friends lived just outside the city limits and still kept milk cows. I often took turns milking and we would squirt the milk from the cow’s teat into our mouths. In years after that, we were persuaded by the media that we should only drink skimmed milk to avoid getting fat. I was a very thin youngster and never got fat even though I drank nearly half a gallon of raw milk daily. I recall that the milk set at our doorstep from the horse drawn milk wagon soon separated into cream and milk. Mother used the cream in making deserts. I have never known or heard of anyone contracting undulant fever. As I look at the scholarly articles on raw and pasteurized milk, I am amazed at how thoroughly the myths about raw and cautions to only use pasteurized have infiltrated the popular mind.

Initially, we incorporate what we experience with our senses. We incorporate what we are verbally instructed to believe about the experience-able world even when we have not directly experienced its validity. Subsequently, we act as though the instruction, the belief, is reality. In more advanced cultures, we incorporate beliefs through text. In our modern culture, we incorporate what comes to us through multi-media in which a machine, an electronic machine like TV or the Computer, instructs and informs us about what is real. In other words, once Homo sapiens evolved with language, we increasingly became, by varying degrees, removed from reality. Homo sapiens constructed levels of meta-reality. I would now like to invent a word for our species that more accurately designates what we are and how we exist. That word in Homo deludiens. In other words, the experience-able world became shrouded in a linguistically constructed veil. The Homo deludiens can only see the material world through that veil; can only see a meta-world. Homo deludiens lives varying degrees removed from material reality, ‘it’ lives in a meta-world, and cannot break through the linguistic veil because ‘it’ does not know the veil exists. Once in this meta-world, Homo deludiens had become remarkably, easily manipulated to believe and to act on the most incredible beliefs without the ability to test to determine their value and utility for their daily living and in some circumstances for their very survival. This explains why such phenomena as “doublespeak” have had such disastrous success. When an occasion arises in which the message, the linguistically constructed meta-world, is contradicted by direct experience, the first impulse is to doubt direct experience. The further removed one is from the possibility of direct experience, or the possibility of testing direct experience, the more completely deluded one can become by “doublespeak.” A major problem has become that even scientific experiments and the exposes of earnest investigative reporters are enmeshed in the vast, linguistically constructed, meta-world.
Homo deludiens lives in a culture-deludiens. That is humanity’s zeitgeist. The individual’s worldview is constructed from within a culture-deludiens from which he cannot escape. The intelligence of humans in arrayed on a Bell curve. The mass of humans want to be led and are easily led. The maturity of humans is also on a Bell curve, however, the average level of maturity varies with the person’s culture, and the type of transmission of culture varies with each culture. To oversimplify for the sake of this issue, the type of leadership can be power-based or intelligence and education based. These easily led masses are led by one of these types but all types are leading within this linguistically constructed meta-world, or bubble. What the masses are led to believe and do depends upon the agenda of the leaders.
The masses can be led to ravenously consume products which are essentially either unessential or even harmful. They can be led to kill people whom they do not know and who have done them no harm, nor done anything deserving of being killed. Leaders who are intelligent and immature or unwise, can skillfully lead others to do incredibly insane things with ease, all because of the way this linguistically constructed meta-world makes this possible, so easily achieved. Furthermore, if the consequences of leadership are incipient and subtle, distant and out of sight, or not to be felt until the distant future, a leader can get away with just about anything. To its great misfortune, Homo deludiens cannot break out of this bubble to get a more historically and futuristically expanded and rational perspective on existence. Doublespeak reigns supreme.
Doublespeak Begins As a Second Language in Childhood and Those Who Master It Rise to Become Leaders in Our Predatory and Controlling Occupations.

There are nascent chinks in the armor of power.
There are nascent chinks in the armor of power. Concealed beneath the dignified bravado and unrivaled self assurance of the powerful person’s public personality, concealed even from their self-acknowledged nefarious private person, there is an Achilles Heel which is a form of insanity and nearsightedness. The peril of this insanity is that it is unable to recognize the strength, ruthlessness, and obsessive ambition of their potential successors. For these, too, are clever charmers devoid of conscience. Like crafty lionesses on the alert, ready to close in when they detect the first signs of vulnerability, they devise their devious plans to stealthily move in for the kill. The ruthlessness of the kill by their rivals will likely eclipse the degree to which the sovereign has demeaned them. Perhaps an even worse flaw of those whose secret creed is power for power’s sake is their belief in their omnipotence. They become drunk with the license to which ‘kings of the hill’ are prone and eventually they far overextend the reach of their control and overestimate the strength and abilities required to achieve their greedy and grandiose ambitions.
The ‘wounded’ king is unwilling to relinquish what everyone knows he has lost. Nevertheless, to maintain his power, when the jackals are closing in, he must and usually does resort to flamboyant displays of retaliation, boisterous protestations, recrimination of his betrayers, character assassination of suspected enemies, economic warfare, attempts at dirty political counterattacks, or even brutal force. Witnessing these grotesque theatricals, fear tends to grip his followers like the jungle’s surrounding scavengers. His assassins are not similarly moved as their Alpha male victor begins his metaphorical victory dance as though on the vanquished king’s grave. He enjoins his co-conspirators to share in the dance. However, among the king’s people, those who were his overt loyal supporters, there is initially fear, which this quickly turns into resentful distrust, and then quickly metamorphoses into sabotage and then outright rebellion as the weakened sovereign is seen to capitulate. Their loyalty is sheepishly transferred to the gloating usurper as he, with great fanfare, ascends the throne. Now begins the sad and sordid cycle as the new king enters the stage with a repeat performance of drunken megalomania. And so, as with the nascent chinks in the king’s armor, the historically demonstrated nascent chinks in civilization, whether with governments or corporations, as well as in the nascent chinks in the very nature of humankind, continues on.

What is the optimal level of unemployment for a healthy economy?
Across the US, technological Innovation is pitted against the pressures for full or optimal employment. Technology replaces functions of workers and eventually replaces the workers. Let call these technological innovations robots. Although actual robots that walk around the room are extremely rare, it is the engineering specialty called robotics that increasingly takes over and performs the work of the employee. Mass production with individuals performing single task like sewing, assembling parts, sorting, inspecting, packaging and so on is very costly if a US worker is used. However, those discrete tasks can be shipped overseas where foreign workers can do the job far more cheaply than robotics. Therefore, whether it is US robotics or cheap foreign labor, the US worker is gradually being put out of work. Ironically, as the outsourced production becomes more profitable, the foreign corporation will choose to replace, let us say, one hundred workers with one robotic machine that in turn will be more reliable, less difficult to manage, and probably produce more units than the one hundred workers. The foreign workers are laid off and, if lucky, they find piece meal work somewhere else at even cheaper wages. And so it goes.
Immigration when there is wholesale outsourcing of unskilled and semi-skilled jobs equals domestic conflagration.

A hypothetical but likely CEO is head of a hypothetical corporation that is responsible for many deaths resulting from dispensing, not by his own personal hand, lethal chemicals into the environment. Perhaps hundreds or thousands of infants die; out of sight and at a distance from him. He is not arrested. His corporation is sued for damages. The legal system’s protocol for such delicate situations allows the proceedings to drag out for decades. Finally, the corporation is ordered to pay what sounds to the public like huge sums of money. The corporation had already set aside funds for ‘accidental expenses’ just such as this. In fact, that huge sum of money is mere pittance to the corporation and it goes on its merry way, learning from this ‘accident’ and finding new loopholes so as to more safely avoid such legal untidiness in the future. Representatives from the public are allowed to protest aggressively and loudly. They call that CEO a heartless, unscrupulous, criminal. The media waves its arms and beats its breast providing vicarious catharsis for the public by calling him a monster. The CEO is not fired. The protest fades from the public’s memory and eventually dies a natural death. The academic experts on psychology of persuasion and crisis management had more than earned the grants they had received from the corporate world.
The hypothetical corporation sued for dispensing lethal chemicals was also the employer of many locals. Locals were employed as factory workers; materials transport; word processors; researchers; maintenance workers; marketers and advertisers; trainers; public relations and liaison officers; production systems analysts; risk, forecasting, production statisticians; legal analysts; medical staff; security; human resources; and many more. Many of these employees are likely to be second or third generation to have been employed by this corporation. The corporation also contributed funds to the community to create recreational centers and sports programs, and even local arts and theatre programs that employed many locals. The distribution of the raw material for the corporation’s products and distribution of those products around the nation employed many people. Most likely, some of the executives of the corporation lived in the local community and got themselves elected to the city council and school board. The corporation donated campaign funds for local elected officials. In one way or another, the corporations had direct or indirect control over a huge percentage of the people working in this community and likely many other communities. In other words, if you consider the way corporations are spread across the nation, employment in under the control of the corporations. The welfare of the employed is directly dependent upon corporations. Now, imagine that you are one of their employees and you suspect that the corporation is engaged in something that is harmful to people in your community and perhaps even yourself. How greatly outweighed are the pressures to whistleblow by the pressures to keep your mouth shut and remain loyal to the corporation. If someone does become a whistleblower, they are likely to be ostracized. Law firms with legal researchers were hired from outside the local community so as to be immune to such pressures. The local Chamber of Commerce will, of course, rush to support and defend the offending corporation.
US Chambers of Commerce stands in a unique relation between businesses and corporations, labor and Labor Unions, and the Military. While virtually absent from media coverage, they, nevertheless, are one of the most powerful lobby organizations influencing legislative and executive decisions and the ultimate direction of the nation. They also have had the greatest influence on the issue of undocumented foreign workers, particularly the workers from Mexico.
Regulating the numbers of workers of various types and levels of skill is a highly complex, difficult and delicate art. Decisions about quotas for importing workers, managing the level of domestic unemployment, and apportioning the size of the military are politically volatile. All three pose a mathematically challenging quandary to macro economists, corporate executives and their lobbyists, the Secretary of Labor, state governors, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, plus the Chamber of Commerce and the Labor Unions. [82] All of these, as well as many Special Interest Organizations act in tandem and yet with constant friction between them, which in turn exerts political pressure on the Executive Branch and an assortment of major parts of the government. All of these are a ‘system’ whose parts cannot be understood apart from one another. Yet, this one very complex system is also is interconnected with all of the other systems being “Singled Out” in this essay.

“The Ascent of Money: The Financial History of the World”, a movie made by T Rowe Price (2009), gave me one of the best insights into the Western world's total lack of self-awareness or self-understanding of how thoroughly conniving and psychopathic the West's evolving economic system has been. It is an exhaustive expose of how brilliant, innovative, totally greedy, narcissistic, megalomaniac, steely, and ruthless have been the men who shaped it and, in turn, have been shaped by it. A fascinatingly dark journey through a history that is the psychological equivalent of a documentary of the mind of Jack the Ripper. For the dispassionately self-examining person, it should also suggest how your culture and you along with it have been shaped. I highly recommend sitting through the full four hours, especially if you have an insatiable curiosity about what makes the world go round, namely money but including the callous exploitation of entire continents and the causes of wars and the vast carnage they have left behind. To see through the glory, opulence, and mind boggling intellectual feats of this odious financial odyssey and gain insight into the profound and incorrigible corruption of the West, you need to maintain an intensely skeptical mind as you view it.
For now, it is important to examine the military independent of the nation’s defense, the Department of Defense, and the Pentagon, the State Department and all of the other departments that determine the missions, materiel, and size of the military. The military, in and of itself, is deeply interwoven in the history, educational systems, fraternal organizations, corporate America, foreign relations, and, particularly important, American family life and civic rituals. The characteristics of the military can be described, metaphorically, as a personality. The characteristics of that personality is infused into the character and personalities of the populace, especially the American male.
‘Man the warrior’ has become an institution and war, with our military, the Pentagon, and the military industrial complex, is avoided only at the risk of wrecking the entire economy. The military, through the ROTC, establishes stations in schools, universities, and ghettos to do their recruiting. They penetrate, integrate into, and adapt to the culture of each setting in such a manner as to appeal to the unique characteristics of the young men and women common to each of these settings.
A highly profitable media industry has been created in the video game arena that is designed entice youth and mold their minds as future cyber versions of ‘Man the Warrior.’ The best example is the proliferation of ‘Black Ops Entertainment.’ Kids can play games that destroy mythical enemies on their monitors. From there, it is easy to recruit them into the military’s cyber warfare. What great self esteem booster to guide a predator to a foreign village, spot what their commanders say is the hideout of vicious enemies, and blow them to bits. [92]
In the computer cubicles within their homes, youth and adult alike are submitting themselves to brainwashing by proxy. Hour after hour, masses engage in mesmerizing multitasking with brief messages of nonsensical trivia, disintegrating their long-term memory and shrinking the span of their short-term memory.[94] With the power of an addiction, young people are seduced into committing virtual horrid acts of brutality yet, they are made to feel that it is only a harmless game, even cathartic if you will. All the while video war games are shaping their brains into becoming impersonal killing machines; perfectly suited for the new way of world warfare, the ultimate anomie of killing at a distance.
TV still works of ensure the influence of the V like pronouncements of Presidents to mold public opinion but they are rapidly being replaced by online sources provided by major networks but especially and more completely by the dominating online Twitters. Yesterday, nothing could beat an image of a president, like all celebrities, created by the image-makers. Just consider the power of JFK when the myth-makers manufactured his the King Arthur persona and is administration as the new Camelot. But now, persuasion psychology has left that in the musty old archives of history with the invention of Twitters and its many replicas. When someone gets online and responds with a one-liner to the issue or question framed by a newscaster, whether it is a yeah or boo, they are thoroughly and vehemently hooked on just the narrow, irrelevant company spiel sought by their corporate sponsor.
You want a war; just get the addled-brained, would-be brainiac, multitasker to enter a response about it on Twitter. One might call the US ‘Hoax Heaven’ for the modern-day hawker who is also a hawk with respect to going to war.
Whether growing in ghetto neighborhoods with a maelstrom of confusion, aggression, and crime or in a upper middle class gated community, youths learn to see other groups, or nations, as enemies that can be killed with impunity. These new excitingly bombastic brutality and war video games simply make the transition to ‘Patriotic’ murder and smooth transition. Their depersonalized environments breed alienation and resentment of demands by parents and authorities to conform to requirements and conventions. These video games, then, also provide catharsis for pent up rage which peaks in the susceptible years of early adolescence.[95]
Cultivating shallow minds and relationships devoid of empathy, the ‘Cult of the New,’ which the media uses to create hero and celebrity worship, causes the youth to covet and lust after the fashions, vogue, the ‘in’ things, the latest that are owned or worn or done by those the idolize. This is the corporate world’s utopia. It is the old consumerism on speed (‘methamphetamine).

The more unstructured is a person’s condition of life, the more the distal are the forces shaping their personality and behavior. In school, a young person is shaped by the rigorousness of the structure of the school. In their neighborhood, it is the affluence, the location, the quality of facilities or neighborhood institutions, and the degree and quality of supervision or monitoring by adult authorities that shapes the personality and behavior of the person. The more there are periods in unstructured settings, the more distal factors such as radio and television music and examples of celebrities exert influence, especially when these are consistent with their life conditions such as type of neighborhood and home. Day after day of being exposed to these external forces, they gradually shape the youth’s worldview, language, values, and conventions of behavior, choice of friends, and immediate preferences and goals.

To overcome the combined effects of the shortcomings of our species and the long, defective devolution of civilizations over many millennia, our cultures must create programs to simultaneously train the entire populace in the traits of maturity on the one hand and institutions dedicated to understanding and redesigning the structures and systems of our cultures that are perpetually self modifying.
Use of roles and teachable-moment situations
So, who is not innocent? By now, I hope you know that that is the wrong question. Existentialism may put to rest the personal quest for objective answers about the meaning of existence and whether or not there is an ultimate external authority who can tell you how to be saved and not die; how to achieve immortality. It does not answer the pressing and practical question concerning what, and mind you not ‘who’, is evil. The question of who is ‘not’ innocent is an existential question and is concerns authenticity and integrity. Civilizations, cultures, which have been built, ever since their origin, on deception; require, require even, deception and therefore inauthenticity. Inauthenticity is the opposite of innocence. If cultures require it, if humans are not aware of or do not acknowledge that, then ‘original sin’ is an inevitable result of culture. Consequently, the cause of human evil acts does not spring from within any person. Ironically, it was Kierkegaard, the Danish theologian-existentialist philosopher mentioned above, who made the famous statement “Man is constituted by his relations.”
The ultimate, but difficult to grasp, source of human evil acts is to be found in the structures and systems of civilizations and their cultures. The law is one of those systems. The law will never, can never, put an end to human evil acts. It neither is an effective deterrent nor is it an effective punishment. The law exists because the other systems are virtual factories that mass-produce patterns of human evil actions. Civilizations can continue to futilely tilt at the windmills of human evil acts using justice systems as its spear. Regardless, it will only be an unwitting, quixotic impossible dream, an outmoded system that should have been entombed with the many other ill-begotten contrivances of humankind’s civilizations for all too many millennia now.
The majority humans will continue to look upwards for a god to save them. They must continue to cling to the musty old texts and genuflect at the feet of hoary headed would be gurus of ‘the way.’ To some extent, teaching the young to look for natural causes may help eliminate superstitious thinking. This may help eliminate the tendency to look to the supernatural as the cause for anomalous events, as well. Atheism, however, will never be in vogue. Preaching atheism is as quixotic as Don Quixote’s tilting at windmills. On the other hand, what can be done to end the pain, criminal acts, destruction, murder, and wars that humans inflict on one another is for intelligent and courageous humans to undertake the necessary massive transformation of civilizations’ antiquated structures and systems. These, in contrast to human intentions and personal responsibility, are not innocent. These are the true evil. The humans shaped by them to commit evil acts are innocent. Calling those who commit evil acts evil is an injustice of gargantuan proportions.
Keep this in your mind until the end of your days: The Days of the Innocents Being Called Evil Must End. “I must help to end this wayward path of all past civilizations for the sake of the health, wholesomeness, and survival of all future civilizations.” To many it may seem unfortunate that the true evil cannot be punished. However, the true evil, being the structures and systems of civilizations, is the only aspect of human existence that can be rehabilitated, corrected, or reformed. For the first time in human history, evil can be reformed when we decide to transform society’s evil structures and systems. Not an easy task as humans will have to make a kind of Copernican Revolution in their thinking. We will have to relinquish our devotion to those multitudes of human activities and enterprises that have provided us with a selfish sense of success, gratification of all manner of desires for acquisition, and with the ephemeral sense of security that came from flitting among all those appealing distractions. To admit that your lifelong goals and beliefs have been in error is extraordinarily difficult for humans.
For The Days of the Innocents Being Called Evil to End, some humans must find the inner strength to make these dramatic transformations in civilizations and cultures. Some brave souls must take up the long and difficult challenge to understand and reform, or restructure, the heretofore irresistibly commanding and pernicious shaping effects that external structures and systems of civilizations have upon the internal structures and processes of individuals. The highly complex interaction between structures and inner processes, specifically the processes of intentionality are the crux of the matter. Within this interaction, its details of how humans universally come to deceive and commit evil acts must be laid bare. A new chapter in history will begin to unfold as the corrupting influence of all previous millennia is undone, rolled back, and positive structures foster authenticity, integrity, and humans’ mutual facilitation of each others’ welfare. If this were to occur, it will be far more significant for humans and human civilization than the Copernicus’ insight that the earth revolves around the sun rather than vice versa. In the modern world, revolutionaries in science or in engineering such as the inventors of the computer are celebrated while an insight that could revolutionize culture is scoffed at or shunned like a pariah.
There are many people in intellectual disciplines, which are to some extent outside of the vast dysfunctional and corrupt aspects of our culture. Some of them objectively study these problems. I suspect that many of them have insights as to what corrective alternatives might work. These experts are aware that the people have been failed by the traditional organizations whose purpose is to care properly for the people. Consider how ineffectual the non-political governmental agencies, pop psychology, religion, science, charitable foundations, and philosophy have been. Whether any group of experts with the knowledge, power, and influence to do so will accept the challenge to make the comprehensive changes needed in the structures and systems of our culture, let on a global scale, is doubtful. Furthermore, if they did accept the challenge, I am extremely pessimistic concerning the possibilities for their success.
Thomas Woodrow Wilson, 28th president of the United States (1913–21), was creator and leading advocate of the League of Nations. In the 1930s, George Herbert Mead, father of Margret Mead, wrote a landmark book called “Mind, Self, and Society” and, in the Appendix, he advocated the globalization of the economy. President Clinton was a strong advocate of globalization. President Wilson was descended from a long line of aristocratic, elitist, Presbyterian clergymen, and scholars, while President Clinton was from a populist background though he received his graduate education from Oxford. Both George, a philosopher, and his daughter Margaret, a cultural anthropologist, were professors and liberal intellectuals. All four were globalists with a small g. Both of the Bush men were capital G globalists. The globalists with a capital G came into influence toward the end of the Reagan presidency with the “Project for the New American Century” (NeoCons[147]) and were Imperialists. They were strongly allied with the British government’s Prime Minister and friend of Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, an ultra Conservative. This continued, in disguise, with the Liberal Party Prime Minister, Tony Blair. The NeoCons pretended to be linked to Wilson but nothing could be further from the truth.
Capital G Globalization is now the center of incendiary political controversy. With strong hues of pro-elite financial philosophy, libertarian opposition to welfare, a penchant of spying on US citizens, promotion of a new sophisticated digitally controlled weaponry, and goals of militaristic world domination, they are now credited with being the cause of the worst recession since the Great Depression beginning in 1929.
It is clear that there is a cataclysmic political war in progress between the small and capital G Globalists.

It was in this timeframe with the Judeo/Christian edict Doctrine of Discovery that all of the atrocities toward Native Indians would ensue - this edict was in essence a license to terrorize, steal, genocide and deem the Indigenous Peoples as subhuman.
The Doctrine of Discovery was a principle of international law developed in a series of 15th century papal bulls and 16th century charters by European monarchs. A racist philosophy, the Doctrine gave white Christian Europeans the right to claim the lands and resources of non-Christian peoples and kill or enslave them – if other Christian Europeans had not already done so.

Bernard Madoff
http://inform.com/people/bernard-madoff
Charles Ponzi, an Italian immigrant from whom the Ponzi scheme got its name, is one of greatest swindlers in US history. It was he who concocted and perfected the simple pyramid-style scam: Claim to have a sure-fire investment plan and promise clients an obscenely high return (in his case, a 50 per cent profit in 45 days), then pay them from the investments of later investors. And so on. When it all came crashing down in 1920, as newspapers had finally and comprehensively blown the whistle on Ponzi's impossible scheme, most investors received only 30 per cent returns on their initial investment. Five banks were ruined in the process. Reflecting America's ambivalence to white collar crime at the time, Ponzi was sentenced to only 5 years in federal prison. Upon his release, however, he was charged by the state of Massachusetts and later in Florida (for another scam), and forced to serve, in total, an additional seven years. He was deported upon his release and died penniless years later, in Brazil.
Barry Minkow
Before the 'Greed is Good' ethic consumed Wall Street in the 1980s and
increased throughout the 1990s, white-collar crimes of a massive nature
just didn't occur with the frequency that they do today. So when
carpet-cleaning king Barry Minkow, of ZZZZ Best, ran what appeared to be
a successful carpet-cleaning company, ZZZZ Best, people were shocked to
see it all collapse in 1987, rotten from the inside-out. His
fraud cost investors an estimated $100 million, and he was convicted of
fraud and sentenced to 25 years in prison. There, in prison, he
became involved in Christian ministry and underwent a complete
transformation. Today he is a pastor and is an outspoken voice
against fraud in the business community.
Frank William Abagnale, the notorious conman, forger and impostor who Leonardo DiCaprio played in the film Catch Me if You Can, was a master of passing off bad cheques, a scheme he employed to great effect, to the tune of over $2.5 million, to be exact. He struck in 26 countries, making him one of the most infamous criminals of the 1960s. After being caught, he served less than five years before he was released in 1974 by the US federal government on the condition that he would help authorities fight crimes committed by fraud and scam artists. He later founded Abagnale & Associates, a financial fraud consultancy.
James Lewis, Another famous Ponzi-styel scamster was James Lewis, who made a living off swindling the elderly of California. He collected around $311 million from investors over 20 years by promising high returns and relying on word of mouth to bring in more investors, paying dividends all the while, to keep up the facade. But he turned around and used the rest of the money to finance his own high lifestyle of fancy cars, big homes and girlfriends, keeping fabricated assets on paper. When it all came crashing down in 2003, Lewis fled to Texas, where he was caught after an FBI manhunt. Upon his conviction in 2006, he was told he had committed a 'crime against humanity', and was sentenced to 30 years. 60 years old at the time, Lewis will likely die in prison.
Martin Frankel, a former US financier from small-town Ohio, was convicted in 2002 of insurance fraud worth at least $208 million, racketeering and money laundering. Frankel was a master at ripping off small-town insurance companies, and he left a path of destruction in every state he visited: Ohio, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi. In an attempt to earn sympathy for the white-collar criminal, Frankel's lawyer said the mousey money manager would be 'particularly vulnerable' to physical assaults in prison, and pleaded for mercy. It fell on deaf ears. Frankel is currently serving a 16 year prison sentence.

[66] Corporations heedlessly endanger the US and whole world http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0195685/ the movie “Erin Brockovich“ dramatizes the deceptive, heartless, and murderous policies and practices of corporations and how they are either legally immune to prosecution or slip through loopholes in the law or else they blatantly escape consequences by the fiat of copious bribery or avoid repercussions through the use of skillful public relations and media spin. For any of these, they are typically allowed to sail past detection or consequence unless an Erin Brockovich takes them to task.

[107] Competitive recreation and cultivation of violence versus sportsmanship
sportsmanship In “Sports in America,” one of his two non-fiction works,
author James Albert Michener (1907-1997) points out that rather than develop
character, athletics reveal character.
Because Lombardi's win-or-nothing imperative brought success on the field, it swept though American sports, elbowing aside the ideal of the sportsman. It even had a huge effect on school sports. Writer James Michener lamented in his mid-seventies book Sports in America that coaches were applying it to kids, robbing youth sports of civility and fun.
